The year is 1999. Brandy and Monica were riding high from the success of their smash hit, ‘The Boy is Mine’, the film ‘Titantic’ had won a record breaking 11 Oscars and our favourite New York rapper, Miss Kimberly Jones aka Lil Kim, rocked up to the MTV video music awards in a lilac asymmetrical jumpsuit, which left a breast exposed to be accessorized with a sequinned tassel. Topped off with matching wig and a dose of queen bee attitude, outfits like this is what led the way for the Lady Gaga’s and Nicki Minaj’s of our day.
‘The Jump Off’ singer has always been known for her eccentric flamboyant style but this is most definitely an outfit worthy of the “Most Outrageous Red Carpet Outfits. Ever.”
Tacky?? Yes. Couture??? Not strictly, no. OTT- most definitely. It would be far too easy to negatively deconstruct this ensemble but it’s outfits like this that make the red carpet thrive, gets people talking and ultimately allows us to remember how boring and monotonous the award ceremonies entrances would be if it was for wasn’t artists taking such risks.
